The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations (VUFO), the U.S. Diplomatic Mission to Vietnam, and the Hanoi People’s Committee recently co-organized the “Vietnam - U.S. Friendship Exchange Program".

VUFO Vice President Dong Huy Cuong and U.S. Ambassador Marc E. Knapper visited an exhibition booth during the Vietnam-U.S. Friendship Exchange Program, held on November 23
Opening the program, VUFO Vice President Dong Huy Cuong noted that Vietnam–U.S. relationship is among the world’s most distinctive bilateral ties - marked by history, challenges, and profound transformations - yet it has evolved into a model of reconciliation between nations.
With the normalization and establishment of diplomatic relations announced by U.S. President Bill Clinton and Vietnamese Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet on July 12, 1995, and thanks to the immense, tireless efforts of leaders and people of both countries under the spirit of "Putting aside the past, overcoming differences, promoting commonalities, and looking toward the future," the Vietnam-U.S. relationship has achieved impressive, breakthrough developments across all fields.
It was elevated to a "Comprehensive Partnership" in July 2013 and further to a "Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace, Cooperation, and Sustainable Development" on September 10, 2023.
The Vietnamese people have always cherished and held close to their hearts the sentiments and valuable support from American friends - including veterans and their families, charitable and humanitarian groups, and U.S. non-governmental organizations.
With goodwill and trust, they have shown empathy, understanding, and the courage to transcend themselves, setting aside the pains of the past to look toward a future of friendship and cooperation. Their contributions have played an important role in healing the wounds of war and in supporting Vietnam’s socio-economic development, integration, and progress.

U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam Marc E. Knapper said the festival stands as a testament to the growth, dynamism, and robust partnership between the United States and Vietnam.
The event honors the courage of individuals in both countries who overcame the lingering aftermath of war, rebuilt trust and mutual understanding, and helped advance bilateral ties to the remarkable heights they have reached today.
The event also looks to the future, as the two sides celebrate and inspire young people who will drive this relationship forward over the next three decades.
U.S. companies have played and continue to play an indispensable role in supporting these goals. The two countries are cooperating to advance education, health, economic prosperity, security, and many other areas.

The Vietnam - U.S. Friendship Exchange Program in Hanoi attracted a large crowd, featuring a variety of cultural and artistic performances, sports activities, and traditional games from both countries.
Visitors also explored exhibition booths showcasing Vietnamese and American culture and cuisine, as well as achievements in Vietnam - U.S. foreign relations.
The event highlighted Hanoi city, the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organizations, the Vietnam–U.S. Association, the U.S. diplomatic mission in Vietnam, and activities of non-governmental organizations and Vietnam - U.S. businesses.
The Vietnam - U.S. relationship has achieved exceptional development steps since the normalization of diplomatic relations on July 12, 1995.
Economically, the United States has become Vietnam’s largest export market, with bilateral trade increasing more than 250-fold since normalization, reaching over $132 billion in 2024. U.S. investment in Vietnam has also grown rapidly.
In the political and security sphere, the two countries have strengthened cooperation through delegation exchanges, particularly at the high-level level, and by implementing dialogue mechanisms and coordinated efforts to address regional and global issues. These include responding to climate change and supporting initiatives within ASEAN as well as Mekong cooperation.
In terms of education and people-to-people exchanges, Vietnam currently has the highest number of students from any ASEAN country studying in the United States, with nearly 30,000 students.
At the same time, many U.S. universities have established and continue to run research and teaching programs on Vietnam, helping to enhance Americans’ understanding of Vietnamese history and culture.
